We feel that the P3 will have a positive impact on Busan. The large vessels which will be deployed within the P3 network are for what we call a “Hub and Spoke” system in which large Mainline vessels connect to smaller vessels. Busan is fortunate geographically to be at the “Hub” of this system for our region. Transhipment is a central and critical part of shipping liner operations and bigger ships and alliances will increase this need. In other words, bigger mainline vessels generally mean a greater use of transshipment in order to fill these ships with containers.

BNCT had the privilege of loading the first containers into several of CMA’s new 16000TEU vessels. We are extremely proud as these high quality vessels were built in Korea. Since that time, CMA has continued to increase their volumes within BNCT. In addition, they have been a great partner working with us on our current facility expansion project in which we will add an addition 675,000 TEUS of capacity.

Actually, CMA has been calling Ningbo almost from the time in which Ningbo opened. With the launch of the P3, we would imagine they will still call Ningbo. However, as the P3 members are foreign non-Chinese carriers it is not legally possible for them to perform transshipment at Ningbo due to China Cabotage Laws. Only Chinese shipping lines are allowed to perform transshipment legally.

Based on the information we have obtained through various sources, it is clear that Busan will stay as an extremely important part of the P3 Network. At the moment, volume estimation for the P3 in Busan do not show any reduction. However, as any Transhipment Hub, the feeder vessels play an extremely important role in the efficient movement of transshipment containers. Our port community must continue to identify ways in which we can assist these feeder vessels and companies towards increasing their volumes and cost efficiencies. By doing this, we will continue to help build and maintain the critical feeder network in Busan which is vital for maintaining and growing transshipment and Intra-Asia activities.

BNCT has been fairly successful in our first two years of operations. We had a smooth start-up of our facility and in 2013 we achieved over 1.2 million TEUS. We anticipate that we will well exceed this figure for 2014. Our main customer base consists of many of the larger shipping lines such as CMA, Maersk, MSC and KMTC. In addition, we handle containers for another 45 shipping lines with various volume levels.

Clearly, we need to maintain and find improvements which benefit our domestic manufacturing market who use Busan for the movement of imports and exports. Our target should be maintaining cost efficiency for our manufacturers within Korea. Efficiencies such as improved road networks for smooth trucking and insuring trucks and cargo move through Busan as efficiently as possible. By concentrating on efficiency we together can help maintain Korea’s manufacturing competitiveness in the Global Market. In other words, our goal must be working together to help fuel the Korean economy. Secondly, for maintaining and gaining transshipment activities we need to continue to improve the efficiency of connecting containers to our large feeder network and improve the efficiency of trucking activities between the various port facilities. Building, maintaining and growing the NE Asia Hub takes everyone’s dedication and involvement along with the continued support of a strong government.
